Programming lessons

Over the last couple of weeks I have been running some Small BASIC programming lessons to a small group of young people. It's great to see these teens wanting to learn programming - at their request we did a double class yesterday and are getting into nested IF-THEN-ELSE conditions.

Azusa Street Celebrations

Over the past week I have been helping Crisis Response International here in Los Angeles as we participate in the 110th aniversary of the Azusa Street Revival. We have been helping with a tent which has been placed on the site of the original Azusa Street Mission (now a public square), ministering to the homeless, and also participated in the Azusa Now / The Call Azusa celebration. It has been an incredible time and a wonderful opportunity to see the Lord touch so many people.

Here are some photos that I have taken over the week.

Uberlândia - MG

I've had a wonderful time here in Uberlandia with the Central Methodist church, after flying up from Rio on Friday, and have ministered four times, with one more opportunity at another Methodist church tonight.Over the last few days we've seen a couple of physical healing, including partial restoration of eyesight, and many wonderful manifestations of the Holy Spirit's presence.

I have an early flight back to São Paulo tomorrow morning, then on to Rio, and should get back home in Friburgo mid to late afternoon.

Londrina - PR

I am now back in Friburgo after having spent the last few days in the city of Londrina ("little London") in the southern state of Paraná with some friends from New Zealand. It was also great to be able to spend some time with Mike Shea, the leader of a worship and intercession ministry known as Casa de Daví.

After several months work (and one builder who simply disappeared one day and never came back), we have finally finished the major work on our old church building, now missions base. The major changes including moving a doorway, adding a roller door and closing off the upstairs flat roof area to make another room.

Games night

It was great to open our base for some of the kids from the teens' group to play games tonight. We're hoping to make some adjustments soon to the building, to make the space more usable and secure, and to prepare for what I hope will be my soon return to the house that I built above the then church building just over ten years ago.

Overnight camp-out

We had a great "camp-out" on the church roof overnight with some of the teens from our group. It was really cool to see how everyone helped with the chores, and we had some real good conversations (and one boy was instantly healed of a stomach-ache when we prayed for him last night).

I'm now back in Nova Friburgo after a very long series of flights back from Christchurch, going through Los Angeles and New York before finally arriving in Rio. It was great to have Felipe pick me up at the airport.

I took the 5:13 train to Manhattan this morning, and after somewhat of an adventure arrived at the Brooklyn Sports Club, where I completed a day-long Red Cross Wilderness First Aid course.

I got a little lost on my way back to the subway station and asked a couple of cops for direction - it was quite funny to hear them tell me to be careful as that particular suburb was "the worst suburb in New York city" and the block where we were was, according to them, the "worst block". I've just arrived back in Greenwich, without any further adventures.

I'm now back in Friburgo after spending that weekend ministering with a church in Belo Horizonte. There were very powerful moves of the Spirit on the Saturday and Sunday nights. There have been very few times I have seen so many children and teens so powerfully touched by the Spirit, as well as the adults.

I had been scheduled to fly to and from Belo Horizonte, but a very late airport bus meant that I missed my flight out (and the airlines thoughfully cancelled my flight back). However, I was able to take a bus to and from the city, a 12 hour ride each way.
Teen group hike

Today I took some our teens hiking up a nearby mountain (I survived!).

While on our climb back down the mountain the teens found and buried a blue parakeet, which seemed to have died of natural causes. Sorry kids, I guess that means that that there won't be any more Rio movies!

I had a wonderful time over the Carnival holiday period ministering at two camps with the Pentecostal Church of God in greater Belo Horizonte, MG.

There were around 120 people at the Eldorado church's camp, where I stayed in a tent from Friday to Tuesday, and I had the opportunity to minister twice. On the Sunday morning there was a wonderful move of the Holy Spirit among the children and teens, and on the Monday evening it was awesome to see the powerful move of the Spirit, with many people being visibly touched by His Presence and with one man testifying of healing of an ongoing back problem.

On the Tuesday night I ministered at another church's camp, with around 50 people participating and a good number of teenagers present. Once again there was a wonderful move of the Spirit, and after the meeting three teenagers told me that they had never felt His presence in such a way before.

Teen CERT course

Today we finished another week-long Teen CERT course at the Cordoeira Residents' Association hall in Nova Friburgo with help from the members of our CERT and Teen CERT groups. The course went very well and we had a great final exercise, based around a simulated aircraft crash, with help from a visiting team of overseas missionaries.

Here are some photos from the course and final simulation exercise:

Today I had a facebook chat with a young man called Carlos Henrique who I haven't seen for at least 14 or 15 years. On my way to Christchurch

I'm currently at the Rio de Janeiro international airport, where a strange robot just took my photo. I'm about to fly to Christchurch, via Dubai, Bangkok and Sydney.

While in New Zealand I'll be taking part in a short course at Massey University and have several university exams to take, and will hopefully also visit Auckland. On my way back to Brazil I'm planning to visit Pemba, Mozambique where I will be running some emergency response team training for missionaries and Bible school students.

Back from an amazing weekend at a Congregational church in Barra Mansa RJ. It was very intense - I ministered Friday night, Saturday morning, afternoon, and evening but very cool, with powerful moves of the Spirit among the young people. There were around 300 present at the meeting last night and a number of people reporting healings, especially of back and wrist pain.

It has been a wonderful time here in Ourinhos - SP ministering the Seeking True Revival seminar, and I have been so blessed to see how Jesus has been pouring out His Spirit upon us. It was really neat to see the younger kids being powerfully touched by the Father's love last night, and to hear some of the testimonies of the awesome things that He has been doing.

This afternoon I start the long series of bus rides back to Friburgo - it took me 18 hours to get here, but as I couldn't get a direct bus back from SP to Friburgo the return trip may take a little longer. Thanks for your prayers!

Nova Friburgo February 2014

Howdy,

Its now been just over three years since Nova Friburgo became the epicentre for Brazils worst ever natural disaster, when heavy rainfall caused landslides and flooding that killed an offical total of just under one thousand victims. Although there have been some signs of progress since then, many of the scars from that time period still remain. Today I took some photos around town to illustrate an article that I am writing for an emergency management publication, and I thought it could be interesting to also share some of them here.

Civil Defence Simulated Evacuation Exercise Granja Spinelli

Yesterday our Crisis Response Unit, together with some of the teenagers that we trained in the Teen CERT program, participated in a city-wide Civil Defence evacuation simulation. Our team of ten responders, with the help of another eleven local Teen-CERT members, helped in the suburb of Granja Spinelli where the siren was activated and the local school was opened as a temporary evacuation point.

It was great to see how our teams worked so well together with the local authorities and other responders from the Red Cross and military.

Teen CERT Course at E.M. Dante Magliano

Howdy,

Last week we ran another Teen CERT course, this time for a dozen teenagers who study at the Escola Municipal Dante Magliano here Nova Friburgo. The course went very well, and it was good to see how the young people learned the basic of emergency preparedness and response during the 20 hour course.

These courses, which are running free-of-charge, have been very well received, and is good to see that we can help prepare our city, which was impacted by  Brazil's worst natural disaster back in 2011. Unfortunately, the recently released Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Plan shows that over 18,000 residents in our city continue to live in houses which have a high to very-high risk of collapse in the event of heavy rainfall.

Teen CERT course, Cordoeira - Nova Friburgo

This past week we have just finished teaching another Teen CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) course in the suburb of Cordoeira, Nova Friburgo - RJ. As you can see from the photos, there is still a lot of damage around from the landslides that happened in January 2011, and as we are soon to be coming into the rainy season once again, it is good to be focussing once again on community preparedness.

It was a great time, albeit very busy, and you can see how we have been able to obtain and prepare the necessary equipment so as offer the course free of charge to the young people of this at-risk suburb. I am also hoping to be able to continue running these courses in city schools, and would appreciate your help in promoting our funding page http://www.gofundme.com/TeenCERTR as we are in need of further donations in order to be able to continue this project.

Nova Friburgo, two years later...

Despite the fact that this suburb is some 2 - 3 km from the centre of the city, as you can see from these photos that I took, it seems that little or nothing has been done in the intervening timespan, and the vast majority of the residents have been forced find other accomodation elsewhere.

It was exactly one year ago today that a message began to circulate through email and Christian websites claiming that a team of American missionaries had resurrected 16 victims of the floods and landslides that had devastated the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro state, resulting in at least a thousand deaths.

Due to factual inconsistencies in the story, compared to my understanding of events as I had experienced them in the aftermath of the disaster, it immediately raised my suspicions - suspicions which were further confirmed when the supposed newspaper front page that accompanied the story was quickly shown to be a fake. Sadly, my many attempts to make contact with the team and with those propagating the story, met with responses ranging from silence to some quite aggressive replies! Eventually, the newspaper front page was admitted to be fake, but the principal parties promoting the story, the Healing Herald site and Bethel church in Redding - CA, maintained that the story was true.
